In 1987, the Library was named to honor John B. Cade, an educator, and author. Cade was the first principal of the Southern University Laboratory School and later became a university dean and Director of Extension Services at Southern University. During his 23 years of dedicated service to the university, he authored several books and numerous articles. He was the founder of the Southern University Archives Collection in which one of his notable collections included the Slave Narratives.
